Actually, this isn't a problem. A white person and a mixed person would not necessarily give a light skinned baby, and most of the time, it's just a tone in between. Skin color is a phenotype coded for by many genes and doesn't segregate independently (even if it did, there would still be a 50% chance the child would be black). You could get a light skinned child from such a marriage but it could also go the other way (in fact, my best friend had a white mother and a mixed father and if you didn't know that, you would have no idea he was part caucasian). Also skin color isn't the only phenotype that can be used by detectives. Hair texture is also used along with facial features that run in individuals from different origins.
